Environmental Superintendent

Westmoreland Mining, LLC Estevan, Saskatchewan (Onsite) Full-Time

Position Summary

The Environmental Superintendent is a subject matter expert who applies the principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. Ability to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control while addressing global issues, such as unsafe drinking water, climate change, and environmental sustainability.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Leads, mentors, and coaches a team of environmental technicians and other staff who perform tasks such as monitoring air quality, water sampling, record keeping and reporting, pond level and flow management, and maintenance of environmental equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•       Participates and is a key stakeholder in developing strategy and content of permit applications that are approvable and acceptable to regulatory agencies.

•       In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements, interpretations and health and safety programs.

•       Coordinates with government agencies to participate in, learn of and administer regulatory updates, and serves as a representative of the company.

•       Determines best ways to meet business goals while protecting the environment.

•       Developing, implementing, and overseeing environment procedures and programs.

•       Monitoring – Water wells, Ponds, Impoundments, Air quality (Purple Air stations), and Surface Water Runoff.

•       Reclamation activities – Overburden sampling, topsoil compliance and disking, reclamation tracking and reporting, reclamation release and tracking.

•       Waste Management – Reporting and tracking recycled waste, SPCC plan maintenance.

•       Project Engineering – Oversee design and construction management of drainages and road projects.

•       Coordinate third-party environmental assessments when required including but not limited to SCDC , archaeological, and hydrogeological sweeps and searches. 

•       Provide environmental regulatory information and answers to staff, management, and mining operations.

•       Provide regulatory compliance reports from annual inspection, GHG emissions, water quality interpretation and reporting, discharges and discoveries, as well as decommissioning and reclamation.  

•       Manage agricultural land leases and land title searches. Review leases and contracts and ensure compliance with governmental regulations and industry standards.

•       Provide information and answers to business partners and regulatory agencies.  

•       Responsible for expenditures on projects and work contracts for reclamation work.

•       Perform related work as required.

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching.  Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work. Some field work when required.

Education and Experience

•       Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Engineering.

•       Minimum 8 years of related work experience.

•       Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

•    Knowledge of legal land documents, including property deeds, land contracts and lease agreements an asset.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

•       Ability to obtain a professional designation within 12 months of hire (e.g. PAg, PEng. etc.)
