Plant- Lab Tech I

Westmoreland Mining, LLC Edson, Alberta (Onsite) Full-Time

Position Summary

Under general supervision perform a variety of routine analytical and physical testing on mining materials, research and development samples and finished products. Ability to make detailed observations and provide basic interpretation of data and accurate reporting of results.

Supervisor Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Test Plant consumables,those being: thickenerPH, magnetite moistureandanionic concentration, to meet specifications and optimizeperformance
    • Performs laboratory testing and analyticsaccording to prescribed standards to determinechemical and physical characteristics or composition of raw and clean coal. 
    • Assistwith mining analytics in regard to raw feed suitability
    • Records test results on standard forms, writes test reports describing procedures used, and prepares graphs and charts
    • Data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area
    • Hand eye coordination, manual dexterity, physically demanding extended task performance
    • Basic computer knowledgein Outlook, Exceland Word.
    • Basic office experience including reporting and filing
    • Sitting, Standing, Climbing stairs for long periods of time

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching.  Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.

Education and Experience

  • Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Science, Chemistry or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
