Job Description

Positon Summary

Westmoreland is seeking a subject matter expert located in either Denver, CO or Edmonton AB who will be responsible for performing multiple engineering-related tasks and projects for Westmoreland. The preferred candidate will design, develop, implement, and analyze technical products and systems and have a broad knowledge of engineering procedures and assist in the resolution of complex problems.

Supervisor Responsibilities

This position may have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proactive leadership in achieving Westmoreland's Health and Safety culture including a high focus on safety within the department and actively promoting Westmoreland's safety standards during all site visits.
  • Provide expert advice to engineers at operations, including provision of advice and advanced instruction on the application of mine-engineering related software and tools. Champion the adoption of improved methods and tools at sites, assisting with justification of investment of resources through to implementation
  • Design and coordinate critical engineering projects. Propose and implement documentation and programs to measure, track, monitor, and improve progress.
  • Manage consultants, design contracts, and provide design direction for construction phases of projects.
  • Coordinate scope and progress of projects with peers both in and outside of Westmoreland
  • Support Mine Engineering efforts on studies from conceptual through to definitive feasibility
  • Provide mining engineering skills for M&A project evaluation and due diligence
  • Analyze information from operations in order to report on and recommend changes to design or operational practice to improve the business and set standards for all Westmoreland sites
  • Systematically assess, evaluate validate and/or audit engineering work of others whether in reports, studies, designs, plans, procedures, contracts or schedules
  • Develop and maintain solid relationships with key site, corporate and project stakeholders related to mine engineering through site visits and follow-up communication
  • Ensure mine planning and economic evaluation of operations at Westmoreland maximize the value of the business

Performance Requirements

  • Experience with mine planning software )XPAC, XACT, Minex, Carlson, AutoCAD, or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of unit costing methods for resource and reserve analysis and experienced in financial analysis and with financial models. Experience with Xeras cost estimating tool a plus.
  • History of ensuring safe operating practices
  • Strong problem solving skills and 3D visualization skill
  • Strong technical writing, group presentation, and interpersonal skill
  • Familiarity with business systems (JD Edwards) and standard office application software

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work. Working on-call, nights and weekends may occasionally be required on an as-needed basis. Travel may be necessary depending on assigned duties. Approximately 25% domestic travel within the US and Canada to visit Westmoreland sites and/or other locations as needed.



Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field from an accredited university
  • Minimum 8 years related experience
  • PE/PEng strongly desired or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
