Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Sr. General Manager is responsible for the safe and cost-efficient operation for one of Westmoreland's largest mines.  The mine produces 5-12 million tons of coal annually.  There are approximately 330+ union and non-union employees.  The Sr. GM is responsible for attaining the targeted level of production and cost budgets, and has primary accountability for the financial performance of the mine. Ensures that Collective Bargaining Agreements are in place and contributes to negotiations when necessary.  Serves as the principal interface with the customer, local community, regulatory agencies, and vendors. The Sr. General Manager will have a key role in leading Westmoreland's continuous improvement.  Ensures an uncompromised safety and healthy work environment.

This position has formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Champions environment and community programs that will support and promote sustainable operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor individuals through strong leadership and relationship building. 
  • Directs the development of new or innovative solution that optimize organization and business performance. 
  • Partners with Westmoreland GM's to seek, implement, and apply best mining\business practices.
  • Applies in-depth knowledge of area of responsibility and integrates with other businesses across the company to create a competitive advantage.
  • Monitors, directs and reports activities of the Company for attainment of budgets, strategic objectives, and specific predefined operating goals and objectives.
  • Develops long-term strategies to optimize and sustain growth and reliable supply of raw materials by supporting all departments with safe procedures and operating behaviors throughout the mine.
  • Determine capital expenditure projects to expand capacity or improve/optimize operations.
  • Accountable for site culture and employee engagement efforts in both salaried and bargaining unit workforce, including labor relations, training and development, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Recognizes and anticipates operational, technical and safety challenges and take action to prevent or overcome them and seeks continuous improvement by championing the Ascend program.
  • Performs related work as required.

Job Requirements

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Engineering, Enviromental Science or a related field.
  • Minimum of 12 year’s of related work experience. 7 years of management experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
