Job Description

Position Summary

Under general supervision, responsible for assisting with the budget, forecast and long-range plan process as well as financial assessment of the plan and operational scenario analysis for Westmoreland Coal Company.

Supervisor Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze current and past trends in key performance indicators including operational indicators, revenue, cost of sales, expenses and capital expenditures.
  • Monitor performance indicators, highlighting trends and analyzing causes of unexpected variance.
  • Prepare and analyze financial information and reports to provide accurate and timely financial recommendations to management for decision making purposes.
  • Ability to assist with the development of the annual budget, monthly forecast, operating plan, and life of mine model.
  • Develop financial models and analyses to support strategic initiatives and decision support.
  • Prepare and review of key business reports provided to external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to review and assess economic scenarios and develop recommendations for management that align with strategic objectives.

Job Requirements

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of related work experience, ideally in the Mining sector but related industries may be considered.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Accounting designation is an asset but is not required.
